About Dr. Joel D. Wallach
Dr. Joel D. Wallach, BS, DVM, ND is internationally recognized as a pioneer in biomedical and nutritional research. A physician, veterinarian, and visionary scientist, Dr. Wallach has spent more than four decades advancing our understanding of how trace minerals and essential nutrients influence both human and animal health. Often called “The Mineral Doctor” and “The Father of Liquid Mineral Supplementation,” his work has inspired millions to take charge of their wellness through proper nutrition and plant-derived minerals.
Education and Early Career
Dr. Wallach earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Missouri in 1962, majoring in Animal Husbandry (Nutrition) with a minor in Field Crops and Soils. Two years later, he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the same university. From 1965 to 1968, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at The Center for the Biology of Natural Systems at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1982, he achieved his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine (ND) from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wallach held key positions with leading zoological institutions and research programs, including the Jacksonville Zoological Park in Florida, the South Africa National Parks Department (where he participated in the renowned Operation Rhino team), and the St. Louis Zoological Park in Missouri. His groundbreaking research has been published in more than 70 scientific papers and 13 books, including the highly regarded textbook “Diseases of Exotic Animals,” still recommended today by the Smithsonian Institution and top veterinary schools.
Landmark Discovery in Trace Mineral Research
In 1977, while serving as a research scientist at the Emory University Yerkes National Primate Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Wallach identified the first known case of non-human cystic fibrosis in a selenium-deficient Rhesus monkey. This discovery challenged conventional medical thinking and set him on a 20-year path of research into the health benefits of selenium and trace minerals. His findings laid the foundation for the use of Plant Derived Minerals™ in nutritional supplementation and helped redefine the relationship between diet and long-term wellness.
The Birth of Youngevity
In 1997, Dr. Wallach and Dr. Ma Lan, MD, MS founded American Longevity, which later became Youngevity—a global wellness company built on Dr. Wallach’s philosophy of nutrient-based health. Within just a few years, Youngevity expanded internationally, reaching customers and distributors in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and Japan. Today, Youngevity continues to provide premium, science-based nutritional products that promote wellness and vitality across the globe.
Advocacy and Public Impact
Beyond his research, Dr. Wallach is a strong advocate for First Amendment rights and for the public’s access to truthful nutritional information. His efforts contributed to the establishment of Qualified Health Claims by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for selenium (“may reduce the risk of certain cancers”) and omega-3 essential fatty acids (“may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease”). These achievements helped pave the way for greater transparency and education within the dietary supplement industry.
Publications and Recognition
Dr. Joel D. Wallach is well known as the co-author of the internationally acclaimed book Dead Doctors Don’t Lie, a wellness classic that has inspired millions to take control of their health through nutrition and mineral supplementation. Based on decades of Dr. Wallach’s groundbreaking research and real-world results, the book reveals the powerful connection between diet, mineral deficiencies, and chronic disease—challenging conventional views of modern medicine and empowering readers with knowledge to live healthier, longer lives.
Beyond this influential work, Dr. Wallach has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed papers and 13 books on nutritional and pharmaceutical science. His respected textbook, Diseases of Exotic Animals, remains a cornerstone reference in veterinary medicine and appears on the Smithsonian Institution’s recommended reading list for zoological professionals.
Through his books, lectures, and lifelong dedication to nutritional research, Dr. Wallach continues to inspire a worldwide movement toward better health—one rooted in the essential power of minerals and natural nutrition.
